Experience and expertise in food safety
Having a strong academic background in Veterinary Medicine and Microbiological Food Safety, and experience if the latter from the perspective of the regulator, the retailer and the manufacturer. I have worked in Tesco’s Department of Product Regulatory Compliance, as a Microbiology Risk and Regulation Advisor. My main duties included conducting microbiological product safety risk assessments, contributing to the UK due diligence food microbiological testing programme and scanning the horizon for emerging risks, new technologies and changes in legislation or official guidance, which may impact the business, consumers and suppliers. I have also worked for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the National Competent Food Authority for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, in the Microbiological Risk Assessment Branch. My main duties included composing food safety risk assessments and providing scientific advice for microbiological incidents and foodborne outbreaks, as well as contributing to the development of FSA food safety guidance/advice. I have carried out hundreds of microbiological food safety risk assessments in response to food safety incidents involving various microbiological hazards, food commodities, processing technologies, food business sizes and stages in the food chain and have experience in providing scientific advice in support of foodborne outbreak investigations and development of food safety guidance, policy and advice. I currently work at Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre as a Microbiology Risk Assessor.
